Technology, banking and buying

September 24th, 2008

How technology has changed the way we bank and buy things

Technology has totally changed the way we bank and buy things. We are now able to access our money every quickly just by walking over to an ATM machine. We don’t even have to get money out as we can pay using Eftpos.

I think that in the future, all banking will all be over the internet. For security reasons I think that everyone will use technology like that used by RaboPlus. You are sent a little calculator looking thing. Following instructions on the internet you have to put your 5 digit password into the little device and then enter the unique code off the internet. Your device then shows a unique code of around 8 digits, which you are then to enter onto the website. During one transaction you are requited to do this twice – it is long and confusing but it helps to insure that all of your transactions are safe and secure.

Unfortunately, with new technology, new security problems arise. Even though our technology for keeping our personal details develop, so does the technology used by hackers to try to steal our personal details.

Online Banking

September 20th, 2008

Personally, I am all for online banking. It may change later on in life but right now as I don’t have a credit card as of yet, I don’t have to pay bills etc. so I find it convenient. I find my online banks easy to navigate around and I am able to easily transfer money from one account to another. Every week I do this – when my boss pays me, he pays it into my account which I have a card for. As I work often, this money accumulates in this one bank account so I have created another one in a different bank that offers higher interest. As I am continuously putting money into this high interest bank account, I am constantly getting more money from interest. If I had to transfer money by going to a bank, I would not do it that often and I would not receive as much money from interest.

Online banking and funds transfer

September 14th, 2008

There are always problems with transferring funds online. The main problem is hackers – if they hack into your account, they can transfer all of your money to their account. A common way for a hacker to get into your account with no trouble at all is if they send you an authentic looking email where you are asked to put down your details.

The CBA has tried to help people with this issue by publishing examples of Hacker/Scam emails. Both the CBA and Teachers Credit Union Website have other security features such as:

-         Login authentication

-         Daily transaction limits

-         Session time lock-out

Users can also do things to help make sure it is safe before transferring funds online.

For example:

-         Choosing a complicated password that you will remember

-         Never write your password down or tell it to anyone

-         Get a NetCode SMS service – This is when you are sent a unique code that is to be used for only one transaction

-         Look at the examples of hacker emails. If you receive one, don’t reply, delete it and inform the banking website

-         Install personal firewalls

Protection from online scams or fraud

Ø      Never use debit cards as it takes longer to get your money back

Ø      Use a dedicated credit card set aside especially for online purchases. This makes it easier to see if someone has been buying things on your card as there won’t be regular purchases on that account too

Ø      Create a separate email account for online purchases with a different password than usual. This means that it isn’t too bad if the account is taken over as it is not your main one. Also, if they did get your main account, they could use it to access other online accounts by using ‘forgot my password’

I use both Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. Both have some similar security features. The main two that are visible are:

Ø      When you are on a website where you put in a password e.g. Hotmail, a little pad-lock image appears next to the url or down the bottom left hand side of the screen. On some newer version of these internet browsers, the url actually is highlighted green to take it clear that this is a secure site

Ø      When you are going into a secure site such as Hotmail, a little screen pops up and says that you are entering a secure website, asks if you want your password to be remembered and other such information. Also, when you press the back button, another screen pops up and says that you are leaving the secure website.

Every internet browser has security issues. Even though the bowsers’ technology is developing, the minds and technology used by hackers are developing too.

I think that the web browser with the most issues is Safari.

http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/06/12/safari-on-windows-a-security-risk/

This article states that “reports indicating that the browser presents a security risk to Windows users.” In this report, a man who is part of a security company states that when looking at Safari he found “6 bugs, 4 Denial of Service and 2 remote code execution bugs.”

eBay

September 10th, 2008

I believe that eBay is an awesome site! My dad has an account and he has used it to buy a very large amount of things. These products include clothes, DVDs, CDs, mobile phone chargers, mobile phone cases, books and more. We have also sold a lot of things such as my old Irish dancing dress, Converse shoes, my dog’s kennel, badges, CDs, and lots of books.

One of the funniest things happened to us when we were selling an album that we had gotten free after purchasing something from Sony. We put it up expecting possibly $10 as it was a proper album but it reached A LOT higher than that. I can’t remember the name of the band but I remember that one of the bidders’ usernames was ‘(band name)fan’. Two people kept on bidding higher and higher for this CD that we had gotten for free. It eventually went for a lot of money – something over $100. Unfortunately, after this event, other people who probably also got it for free, put theirs up on eBay and eventually, the average selling price was around $15. We were very lucky as we were the first ones to sell this CD and we had two people fighting for it.

But you have to be careful with eBay because sometimes things aren’t what they seems or the sellers are scammers. We purchased a GBA (Game Boy Advanced) game over the internet. I can’t remember which one it was but when one arrived, we found out that it wasn’t in English, it was in Japanese. We went and looked at the page where it was being sold, and found out that it did mention that it was in Japanese but it was in very tiny print among a load of different information. We can’t blame the seller as it was written down but we did mention to them that it needed to be clearer.

Also, I have heard from friends’ experience that some of the sellers were scammers. One of my friends bought an expensive coffee table and paid a lot of money for it and paid extra to get it packaged and sent safely. Unfortunately, whoever had been selling the product did not send it so my friends never got the coffee table and left quite a few hate mails to the user’s account. I’m not sure if they ever got their money back.

Payment for online retailers

August 25th, 2008

eBay:

You can pay by PayPal or by using your Credit Card.

You have to be at least 18 to register. It gives an approximation of the cost in Australian dollars if it is listed in a different currency. There is not an accurate way to calculate the exact cost of an item if it is listed in a different currency as the Australian Dollar and other currencies are going up and down in the market so there is no definate price.

Ticketek

You have to buy using Credit Card – you have to enter you Credit Card details to create an account.

You have to be at least 18 to register as you have to be 18 to get a Credit Card

If you buy tickets to a 18+ concert and you are under 18, you will have to show ID at the door anyway

(CHECK THESE DETAILS WITH MUMMY!)

Coles

You can pay using Cash, cheque, Visa, Master Card, American Express and EFTPOS

You can register at any age. All products are bought locally, nothing is brought in from overseas.
